Indoor garden

In winter, it's a little hard to get much fresh food from the garden. I keep salad greens going in the house throughout winter. These we eat as baby green, as a supplement to purchased lettuce mixes. I hope to do better with a winter garden in 2010 - we'll see.

My indoor garden consists of primarily house plants. I have a few cacti, tropical green plants that would prefer warmer feet than my home offers, and some garden plants. I am keeping carrots inside even though they are not really actively growing at present.

Same for my radishes. But in a few weeks - yeah, it's almost February!! - I'll be able to put them outdoors a bit during the day. Then they will start to take off. I put them against the foundation of the house where they are sheltered by the entryway to the house. This "L" gives lots of protection and is a great help in spring and fall for extending the growing season for my potted vegetables.
Canned vegetables, sauces and pickles bring in the freshness of the summer garden in a way canned goods from the store just does not.  This winter, we have enjoyed several new pickles, recipes follow later, just a photo for now. I generally am not a pickle person. But I find that by making them myself, I can adjust the flavors to suit my families tastes. It does not take much to make a few jars of several kinds, and they really liven up a meal. I had no idea so many flavors were to be had. I understand, now, why there is a book written devoted to pickles!!
So, my garden at present has several forms - my living room - dining room with my plants, and my canned goods and frozen goods. I freeze all my extra peppers and tomatoes. They are very handy to use when I need them. And the tomato skins slip right off when thawed slightly.

   PICKLE RECIPES TO FOLLOW later.

I brought some pots in tonight that I have had outdoors to stratify the seeds. They are prairie plants that need the freezing/thawing cycle of winter to germinate. In part of my yard I have a "prairie", a woodland garden, a shade garden and a vegetable garden. I hope to re-do part of the yard and that will be documented in a sister blog: This Gardening Year. For now, I'm dreaming and planning, and enjoying the produce put up this fall. Most of my recipes are posted at my other sister blog: Gray Cat in the Garden, please feel free to hop over and take a look. Each blog will focus on a slightly different aspect of cooking/gardening/leisure. I hope you enjoy the walk with me.
